Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1614-1662)
During the ravages of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the Habsburg castle in Prague was looted and many works of art were scattered. It was not until the younger brother of Emperor Ferdinand III (1608-1657), Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, that the Habsburg collection once again entered a period of expansion. Leopold Wilhelm served from 1647 to 1656 on behalf of the King of Spain as governor in the Netherlands and started to collect works of art there. He has been praised as one of the most astute connoisseurs of art in the Baroque period. He had paintings by three masters of the Venetian school (Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto) and those by the Flemish painters Rubens and van Dyck moved to the Stallburg, forming some of the core pieces in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna today. The Archduke's entire collection was inherited by his nephew, Emperor Leopold I (1640-1705).
