Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612)
Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II had the capital in Prague and a strong interest in the arts and natural sciences, being a ruler of exceptional vision in this regard. In fact, he sent people on his behalf to Italy and Spain specifically to collect works by the Italian masters Correggio, Parmigianino and Titian, and he avidly pursued paintings of the German artist Albrecht Dürer and masterpieces by Pieter Brueghel the Elder in the collection of his brother, Archduke Ernst of Austria (1553-1595). In addition, Rudolf II invited the Antwerp artist Bartholomäus Spranger and Hans von Aachen to the castle in Prague to do paintings. Works by these artists best represent the so-called "court style of Rudolf II."
